How to make fish biryani at home in restaurant style
The major
ingredients of the dish are Basmati rice, fresh Rohi (ରୋହି) fish
and good quality biryani masala. Rest you just follow the steps, and we can
ensure you will get the best result.

Ingredients :
- Rohu Fish– 4 pieces of medium size ; wash thoroughly
- Turmeric powder – 1 tea spoon
- Chilli powder – 1 tea spoon (optional)
- Mustard oil – 2 tbl spoon
- Onion – 1 big ; cut into long strips and fry it until golden brown and keep aside. If you have brown onion from the super market then still you can use it.
- Biryani masala - 2 table spoon
- Ghee – 3 table spoon
- Mint leaves – 20 grms
- Kewda water : 1tble spoon
- Basmati Rice – 1.5 cups or 375 grams; wash and soak it for 30 mins and then drain the excess water
Method to prepare fish Marination :
Although
people used to do different types of fish marinations while doing the preparation of the dish. But here, we made it simple
and easy. So, do not worry, keep following the steps and you will get the best
result.
- Add turmeric powder, salt, chilli powder (optional) and few drops of mustard oil. mix well and keep aside for 5 mins.
Method for Fish fry :
- Take a pan or tawa and heat it in low medium flame (it is important to know how much heat is needed to fry the fish). Add oil and heat until the smoke come out.
- Add the fish pieces one by one (be little careful as oil may split) and turn the heat to low.
- Slowly cook the fish (without covering the lid) and turn upside down after few minutes. Repeat the same process one more time and the fish fry will be ready in 10 to 15 mins.
Method for fish Biryani :
To get the
best result of biryani you need to choose a heavy base/bottom handi. This will
help to cook slow with the spices and will give a nice aroma.
Let’s start making Biryani :
Boil water . Add 1 bay leaf , 1 big cardamom,
1 small piece of cinnamon stick. Add the soaked rice and cook it until 50% done
. drain water and keep aside . It will take about 5 to 7 mins.
To make the dum
- Take the handi ,add ghee and spread every where.
- Add half of the semi cooked rice, half of the brown onions, sprinkle half biryani masala , sprinkle little salt, half mint leaves
- Put the fried fishes gently
- Add remaining rice and spread nicely. Add the left over fried brown onions, mint leaves, biryani masala and sprinkle the kewda water.
- Add half cup of water by sprinkling every where.
- Tightly cover the handi with its lid and you can seal it with wheat dough .But if you don’t wish for any complicated process, then just cover the lid and put a heavy metal item on top of the lid so that the steam will be inside the pot while cooking the biryani.
Cook for
around 10 – 15 mins in low heat and you can smell the aroma when it is done .
